Public Safety

We must have more officers on the streets. We must support our first responders with first class pay, training and equipment. We have made much progress improving our support for each of these objectives, but much more is needed.

Addressing safety involves everyone. We need government to fully support our law enforcement, but we also need schools, prosecutors and judges to also help curb this problem. As a member of the Metro Council, I have led efforts to enhance the pay, training, and tools available to our officers, as well as worked with our schools, neighborhoods and suburban cities to try to address their concerns.

Through vigilance and constant communication, we have made progress, but that progress must be sustained and our focus must not waiver.

My plan for continuing to improving safety throughout our community:

More Officers on the streets: We are short nearly 250 officers due to reductions in force made by Mayor Greg Fischer, We have successfully hired more officers and kept officers longer following the change in administrations and Metro Council’s passage of new collective bargaining agreements, but still need a new training facility as well as other tools to help officers address crime. I have supported every single request for support for LMPD, and will continue to do so. I will oppose any and all efforts to defund our police, and will not rest until the people of this community feel safe.

Enforce our Laws: We must hold judges accountable when they release persons convictor or accused of violent crimes. There are far too many people out on our streets committing additional crimes because a judge allowed them to be released early or with little to no bond.

Support our Suburban Fire Department: Our suburban Fire Departments provide an excellent service at more efficient rates than could be provided elsewhere. We must support our suburban fire departments and see them as an asset rather than competition with Louisville Fire.

Additional Use of Technology: The Metro Council helped to bring the use of FLOCK Cameras as well as ShotSpotter to use by LMPD. These technologies have helped to save lives and solve crimes. We need additional resources and priority given to help deploy even more of these types of technologies out into our community.
